Watching a scary movie is a great way to get into the Halloween spirit.  Horror movies have a wide range of sub-genres for every taste.  Here are ten spooky favorites in random order for your viewing consideration. The Possession of Michael King is an underrated found footage/first person POV horror flick about a documentarian who’s coping with his wife’s tragic passing. Listen to this film with the volume turned up because the sound effects add to the scary tension.

#8. The Wailing 
Starring: Do-won Kwak, Jung-min Hwang, Jun Kunimura
Director: Hong-jin Na
The Wailing is a Korean horror movie that doesn’t use jump scares. The story is about a police officer investigating a deadly sickness that’s spreading around town. It’s the kind of horror that slowly creeps up on you and when it reveals itself, it’s unsettling.

Starring: Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Kathryn Bigelow’s vampire movie where the vampires are actually dangerous and a little crazy. The cast is killer featuring a young Adrian Pasdar and  everybody’s favorite the late, great Bill Paxton.

#6. Stir of Echoes
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Kathryn Erbe, Illeana Douglas
Director: David Koepp
A supernatural thriller about a man who’s starts to see strange things after being hypnotized. Stir of Echoes features a great performance by Kevin Bacon. The haunting ghostly visions and the unraveling mystery makes this a memorable movie.

The Lost Boys is an old school vampire movie that’s got an entertaining mix of humor, thrills and memorable moments. Kiefer Sutherland as a vampire is one good reason alone to watch this.

#3. The Orphanage
Starring: Belén Rueda, Fernando Cayo, Roger Príncep
Director: J.A. Bayona
Director Bayona’s 2016 film A Monster’s Call didn’t hit the mark, but his earlier Spanish horror movie The Orphanage is quite good. The Orphanage is a psychologically heavy film and the ending pays off. The story is about a woman who reopens the orphanage she grew up in, soon after her son goes missing.

#2. Dog Soldiers
Starring: Kevin McKidd, Sean Pertwee, Liam Cunningham
Director: Neil Marshall
A cult werewolf horror film from the same director as The Descent. Dog Soldiers is unrelentingly raw in the best possible way. It’s great that there’s no CGI werewolves here. Familiar faces include Kevin McKidd from HBO’s Rome and Liam Cunningham from Game of Thrones.

Starring: Kurt Russell, T.K. Carter, Keith David, Wilford Brimely
Director: John Carpenter
A sci-fi horror classic starring the very charismatic Kurt Russell. The concept is simple yet effective at evoking horror. Not only is “The Thing” extremely deadly, it can take the form of another living organism which means everyone is a possible suspect. You’ve also got to love the good old fashion special effects.
